Just as the word “success" can be very subjective, so can the valued we attach to being successful. Granted the skillset has definitely changed in comparison to the ones required to succeed in the good ol days.
It's kinda funny now that I think about it. The major skillsets 100 years ago were having knowledge in using your sidearm to kill, drinking whiskey in the saloon, being thoughtful and respectful to the lasses. Other skills like getting a proper education and learning how to read were important to those who wanted to become successful. But in general, most of the rugged men occupied themselves with digging for gold and killing anyone who threatened to take it….
Now, in today's society, the major skillsets are geared towards education with an emphasis on repetition and retainment rather than learning with hands on instruction as with auto shop, woodshop and home-ec. Other nonsensical courses within the fine arts and music curriculums have (or are currently being) phased out of the mainstream public courses and replaced with more mathematics and science syllabus based courses that require the student to follow directions exactly as told and retain and repeat all that you learn. I feel like we're all being turned into a herd of sheep…. getting ready to be hearded to the slaughterhouse.
