If you have the opportunity to meet a true master, whether online or in person, it doesn’t matter. However, if the person you're learning from is merely imitating without real substance, then you'll only learn superficial things. The internet is just a tool—the key is how much genuine knowledge it carries.
As for the idea of becoming a disciple, the traditional martial arts concept of apprenticeship might not be what you think. Finding the right teacher is about fate, and the same goes for the teacher finding the right student. Both have needs: students want to learn, and teachers wish to pass on their real skills. If the lineage breaks, a teacher feels the same sense of failure. Therefore, becoming a disciple isn't something money can buy, and a teacher doesn't necessarily accept a student based on wealth alone.
Fortunately, with the internet today, it’s easier to access information, so if you’re sincere, finding a good teacher is not as difficult as it used to be. But in a world overflowing with information, you need the ability to discern the real from the fake. The saddest part is that a great teacher could be right in front of you, but you might not recognize them.
That’s why it’s important to stay dedicated, keep learning, read related books, and gather as much knowledge as possible—it will always help you in the long run.
Even if you find a great teacher, remember that they can only guide you. True mastery comes from your own practice.
