I assume you are an adult trying to learn the language. My unorthodox way to really know the language well and have the time, i suggest learn its history, culture and philosophy through your native tongue first. At least it gives you a better understanding and an easier way to get a foot hold on. forget the oral aspect of the language first. Concentrate on the etymology of the reasons a particular chraracter is written. The Chinese script is like computer icons. They all mean the same but pronounced differently. An example, a file folder icon is not called the same in french but the picture denotes the same thing. When at least a reasonable understanding is reached then tackle the audio aspects of the language. At this way, your memory is not inundated by so mant different things to remember at once.
this way of learning is fir the sake of love with the language and because you try to make a living from it through work or business or other motive. When you love someone, one does not care the difficulty trying to make it yours
