How do native speakers spell words while writing them? If there's a word "cat", do people spell (in mind) "C-A-T" while writing it down or do they think "k-ah-t"?

We always think of the letters, not the sounds. This is a result of years of formal instruction in spelling, in which pupils are expected to spell words out orally, letter by letter, as well as take regular written spelling tests.
