Any of the following:
Nobody told Kat it was doomed Tuesday.
If it had been nine, none of this would have happened, but it wasn’t, so it did.
I shouldn’t be telling you this story, but here goes.
When Farouq returned to the market, it was missing. A sixty-foot crater had taken its place.
What do these have in common? Not a great deal, except that they all excite curiosity and they all introduce the idea of conflict.
For my money, the best first line in literature is the start of Brighton Rock: Hale knew, before he had been in Brighton three hours, that they meant to murder him.
The problem is, Hale does get murdered a few pages later, and the story never recovers.
Coming up with a brilliant first line is one thing, writing a story worthy of it is rather different.
