I’ll tell you a secret: my first attempt at writing was so bad that no one would want to read it, and I suspect that’s not unusual. When I started out, writing reminded me a lot of long-distant running, which I also did on-and-off. In both situations, you need to do a lot of exercising (be it brain or legs) before you reap any reward.
I’ve never made a career out of it, so maybe you need to ask someone who has, but I’m a strong believer in writing a story that you would like to read. Basically, there’s no joy in writing something that doesn’t excite you or want you to return to the page. I found, if I wrote something I enjoyed, then other people would like it too.
