What is meant by 'flow' in writing, and how do I maintain it?

I wish I hadn’t read this question. Now I have to put aside boring chores demanding my attention and try to find a meaningful answer.

Well, writing isn’t easy, but reading can be. When words slide through the mind and form visuals without getting snagged on thoughts that take a reader out of range of the ongoing idea or subject matter, it flows. Answer is, stay on course. Consider transitions. Guide a reader’s focus through changes by subtle foretelling. A reader must be following the thread of the tale all the way, which means he/she will be prepared to accept any revelations the writer plans to make. It’s not too different from following a road map. A reader knows that a curve is ahead, he just doesn’t know exactly where it will take him until he sees it.

Movement is essential. The writer follows a fine line. He must foreshadow without making the journey boring, over simplified. This is how he maintains the flow. He must take care not to be obvious, else the reader is not pulled forward into the action, and he must not try to tell so much that the trail gets cluttered. You want to make the reading easy, even if the intent is to reform the world.

Consider the objective…a clear and rational mind produces clear and rational writing. Good luck.
