What is the average cost per page for professional editing for a new writer with no prior publications?

I’m not sure what the average per page rate is these days because I charge hourly. Whatever it is, it would be the same rate for a new author as it is for a seasoned author with multiple books on the shelf. The cost of a service is determined by the level of skills and experience of the person providing the service.

With that in mind, check the Editorial Freelancers Association website for current market rates, and be wary of anyone who offers to work substantially below that rate. This is a field in which you generally get what you pay for. I recommend searching the EFA database to find an experienced professional. Most will provide a sample edit for free to give you an idea of how they work, but don’t count out the pros who charge for samples. It may be a signal that the professional has a busy roster—-a sign of good quality—-and their time is valuable. I never charged for samples, but I think if I ever were in a position to take on new clients in the future, I would do so going forward.
