What is the sub-/contextual difference between "angst" and "fear"?

“Angst” is the german word for “fear”. Americans seem to think it means a more existential kind of fear than regular fear, a more German kind of fear maybe. But as a German I can tell you that our Angst is just good old regular fear in a different language.
