Has he tried the state unemployment office? You could take his background and focus on his last two or three jobs sending letters of interest to their competitors. I worked for a competitor once or twice. It's a good way to see advances thru competition of products in the marketplace and gives a broader perspective of future development!
I believe the market is hot for age and experience. Being in the RIGHT place at the RIGHT time with the RIGHT skills and experience is about as good as it gets. My salary more than DOUBLED (circa 1975) because TIME was of the essence and the job had to be filled IMMEDIATELY!
