Listen, when I started building my first learning platform, I thought I just needed a website and some PDFs. Ha! Talk about a rookie mistake! 😅
After a few years (and plenty of facepalm moments) in the e-learning world, here's what you'll really need:
• A Learning Management System that actually works (and doesn't break every five minutes)
• Something to host your videos (because YouTube just won't cut it)
• A way to handle payments that won't give you nightmares
• Simple login stuff for your users
• Something to track how your students are doing
But here's what nobody tells you - you need a solid way to check if your students are actually learning anything. I was totally stuck on this part until another teacher told me about TestHQ. Game changer! Made creating and grading tests so much easier. Wish I'd known about it months earlier!
Look, the trickiest part isn't even the tech stuff. It's making everything super easy for your students to use. I've seen amazing courses tank just because people couldn't figure out how to move between lessons. Such a waste!
My biggest tip? Don't try to build everything at once. Start small, get it working, then add the cool stuff later. Trust me on this - I learned it the hard way!
Quick story - I once spent forever building this fancy AI thing that recommended courses... and exactly zero people used it. Meanwhile, my students just wanted a simple way to see their progress. Talk about missing the point! 🤦♀️
Hit me up if you want to know more about specific tools - pretty sure I've tried (and probably broken) most of them by now! Nothing beats learning from someone else's mistakes, right? 😉
PS: Whatever you do, don't forget to test everything with actual users. My mom doesn't count as a test user... learned that one the hard way too! 😂
