What are the guidelines for using the word “said” when writing dialogue between two characters?

What you mean is called a dialog tag, e.g. he said, she asked, they shouted, etc. When you have dialog between just two people in a novel, it is best to leave out as many as possible because they interrupt the action and forward movement of the scene. Include such tags only when you believe your readers might experience confusion about who is talking.
