Question: What are some reasons why people who love writing as a hobby do not peruse it as a profession?
Those who write often have different reasons for doing so, and not everything you do in your life has to be monetised.
Some people just enjoy writing a diary as it helps them organise their thoughts or process their feelings. Some people like to write answers to people on Quora and help share their knowledge. Some people love to write fan-fiction about their favourite characters and share it with other fans.
There is a huge variety in writing, and as a hobby, it can just be that, a hobby.
Hobbies are there to be enjoyed and are to help you relax at the end of a day’s work or on your weekends and holidays.
If you turn your writing hobby into a profession and start writing for money, writing to deadlines, writing for clients, it’s not a relaxing hobby anymore. The pressure applied when you turn your hobby into your moneymaker can take out all the fun. Hobbies should take stress away from you, not add to it.
There is also the possibility of just not being that good at it.
That’s part of the joy of hobbies. You’re experimenting, you’re playing, you’re being creative without any worry of whether it’s good or not. You should be enjoying yourself and not holding yourself to any professional standards.
Many people are not that good at writing but they just do it because they enjoy it, they shouldn’t feel any pressure to start making money from it.
If someone’s hobby was cycling I wouldn’t ask them why they don’t want to become a professional cyclist.
