Well, I don’t know the whole answer, but I can tell you that, for me, when I write, I am forced to think for a minute about exactly what I want to say, and even after I’ve written something, I will often go back and reword it, or even delete it. But when I speak I have the bad habit of just blurting out what’s on my mind at the moment. How often have we all said things and wished immediately that we’d said it differently (or not said it at all!)?
It’s so much easier to marshall our thoughts and come up with just the right word or phrase when we are witing, but speaking is spontaneous and instantaneous, and so we don’t always take the time to carefully marshall our thoughts and think about just the right way to express our opinion or respond in a conversation.
