Are there any websites or apps that have articles that cover various topics? I want to improve my English writing skills.

I have a few suggestions for you based on my experience teaching English is 7 countries on 4 continents over the past 15 years.

You could try the free website called

Breaking News English.

It has thousands of articles on a wide range of topics from beginner (level 0) to advanced (level 6).

Just click on an article title to get the page for that article where you can access 27 or so exercises based on it. Some are writing and grammar and vocabulary exercises.

Or, do the two page mini lesson for that article with a tutor, and ask your tutor to mark your answer to the writing prompt included in the mini lesson. You can also try writing your answer to the role play question instead of talk it through.

2. Another good way to improve your writing is to work through the writing workbooks on englishforeveryone.com.

3. Read fiction. If you want to learn to write well, you need to be exposed to high quality writing. Most news articles are written at a grade 4 level.

Articles also don’t include the language for expressing emotions, opinions, idioms in context, phrasal verbs, describing situations and the descriptive language for creative expression. Fiction does include this type of language.

Many of my mid to upper intermediate students struggled to do well on high school and university courses because they had not read fiction, and only had ‘textbook English’ knowledge and vocabulary related to non- fiction topics. They wondered why they weren’t fully fluent in English despite years of study, and this was why.

My students who read stories as well as non-fiction articles excelled in English writing. They just knew what sounded ‘right’ and their grammar and written language sounded much more natural.
