How far will AI go in ""mimicking writing style"" before it becomes undifferentiated from the actual writers?

At the moment, it’s on the wrong track. Large Language Models are just glorified auto-complete programs: they have no understanding of what they’re writing. So they can’t generate a real story, except by chance. I sometimes earn pin money by helping mark the output of an AI and in two years I’ve seen it produce one decent (very) short story and one and a half decent poems, in a flood of tone-deaf rubbish.

In order for an AI to genuinely write and create, we would need to learn how to make one that was genuinely conscious and intelligent and able to understand what it was saying.
