There could actually be several reasons underlying this! One which certainly comes to mind, is that same person may be illiterate or have trouble expressing themselves in a verbal manner. Then again, I’ve never personally heard of someone not writing something down due to poor or bad handwriting!
Those whom have poor or bad handwriting, may do so because they may have received a poor Education. Conversely, their own attention span within the Classroom, may have been very limited, and therefore, nothing was gained from the Educational System. An inability to learn while attending School, can have lster knock on effects. Hence why, here in the U.K., and some years before, the Secondary School leaving age was extended! Too many youngsters were previously leaving the Education System, and with no proper Reading or Writing skills. The question then arises, “Did that compulsory extension of the School leaving age, help in the furthering towards a better grasp of the three RRR’s / Reading, Writing and Arithmetic?
It quite honestly wouldn’t really surprise me, if someone with bad handwriting, actually believed that their own writing was legible. Sometimes poorly Educated people, go thru their lives behaving as though they’re quite normal. Normal that is, until they have to perform some simple written task. And then there’s those people, whom have benefited from a good, all round, solid Education, and whose handwriting is absolutely appalling! Such was the case of an Antiquities and Coins dealer, whom I once knew. Rather than “move with the times,”he would write all his labels my hand, which consequently had the effect of much of his descriptions of artefacts being almost illegible. Often, it would personally take me several tries, before I could figure out, what the label actually said. I quite honestly don’t understand, why he couldn’t have typed them out, at the very least. Quite obviously he both knew and understood what he had written down, but gave absolutely no thought for the buyer, on the receiving end. His handwritten letters, were just as bad, if not at times worse.
I’m my own personal experience, it doesn’t really matter that much, whether a person is illiterate or well Educated, because it doesn’t seem to stop them from writing something down. That is of course, unless that same person is so illiterate, that they have no real idea how to form words, in which case, anything they subsequently attempted to write, would ultimately read as nothing more than gibberish.
