How can I write a realistic narcissistic character?

To write a realistic narcissistic character, you should focus on the subtleties and complexities of their behavior and motivations. It's also important to show their vulnerability—moments where their façade cracks, revealing insecurity or a deep-seated fear of inadequacy. These characters can be sensitive to how they're perceived and may overreact to criticism or perceived slights.

Your character's backstory could provide context for their narcissism, such as past traumas or a history of being alternately praised and criticized, leading to a fragile self-esteem that they protect with narcissistic behaviors.

In their interactions, they might react to indifference with confusion or anger, as it goes against their need for validation. During a discard, they could become vindictive or try to regain control. Remember, the key to a realistic portrayal is to balance their negative traits with humanizing elements that make them a fully fleshed-out character.

The narcissists in my tales have backstories that are usually traumatic, in which they try to change and heal or find people to help them do so. Empathetically, I try to paint them in the best light that I can.
