Poetry can be distinguished from other forms of writing through its stylistic elements. Usually, poetry evokes a musical quality and flow and is dependent on figurative language (metaphors, similes, personification, symbolism, etc.). With the exception of playwrights, literary fiction, song lyrics, etc., (generic) writing can survive without these elements. If I were to decipher the main difference between generic writing and poetry, I would say the point of poetry is to evoke a vivid experience for the reader with as few words as possible. Great poets are notably renowned for using few words to accurately or vaguely convey a deeper meaning.
