How do writers' families typically view their work?

I never ask anyone if they have read my work. I always assume that they have not. It saves them the embarrassment of saying or demonstrating that they don't know my work. This extends to my kids and my siblings and cousins. They have no duty to read my work, and so I try never to even bring up what I do for a living. If you want to know what they think of my work, you'll have to ask them yourself. And then don't tell me what they said. I prefer to imagine they respect what I do, without pursuing it beyond that level.
