A typewriter?
Possibly as a nod to the profession, but to actually work on?
Dear gods no!
Sorry but between basic editing, the ability to save and transfer the data, and send a manuscript to an editor in a digital format is far too convenient, and that's before the spell checking, and formatting bonuses of a computer.
If you really want to impress a writer with a gift, find out what size keyboard they like, find thier preferred mechanical switches for the keys, and buy them a decent mechanical keyboard and some nice asthetic, but functionality usable key caps.
Just be aware of your budget, mechanical keyboards can get pricy very quickly…
… and can easily start an addiction to the *click* …
… and custom key caps…
… And the latest switches with hefty clock…
… actually this is a bad idea…
… buy them a coffee mug!
