Unfortunately, Souray’s answer was waaaaay off the mark.
A copywriter isn’t different from a content writer…but a content writer is different from a copywriter.
See what I mean?
If you’re a copywriter, you will (but not always) write in the forms of advertisements. These include but are not limited to:
Direct mail
Billboard/other printed media
Web banners
Any form of written advertisement you can think of
B2B Sales (Business to Business)
B2C Sales (Business to Consumer)
Your end goal is to sell. Copywriters always have one goal - sell the prospect reading the material.
Think of copywriters as “salesmen in the written word”.
Content writing is more “journalistic” in it’s nature. It’s intent is to inform, but not sell.
GOOD copywriters will always attempt to blend the two. Be helpful, but at the same time, try to nudge towards a sale.
I hope that answered your question.
