It is so easy to get discouraged as a writer, and I am someone who is discouraged often. It feels like all my hard work or my exciting idea was all for nothing if it’s not getting the attention it deserves. And then I question if it deserves the attention at all.
Something I have realized in sharing my essays and work online is this—even if it gets no comments, reshares, or like, I have no real clue as to who read it.
You don’t know who is watching, who is reading and celebrating you. They may just not be someone to respond.
And then one day, or on occasion, someone shares your essay on Twitter or sends you a DM saying how much they loved it.
It is normal for us to want recognition or acknowledgment. Feedback can fuel us, but it can’t be the motivator for doing what we do. We will wither.
While it may feel awkward or painful to do so, but try asking for feedback. Share the piece directly with someone. Don’t put them on the spot, but ask them to read it and let you know what they think.
Be a bit proud of yourself and remember it is all a practice.
