A couple of things. First, you really get to know and understand the poem if you memorize it. You can recite it out loud, which is how poetry should be “read” in the first place. Thus, you discover the poem’s sound — an important aspect that is often lost. More generally, you train your memory. And it gives you something to do in boring moments; remembering a favorite poem can brighten your hours.
