Is it possible for someone with poor reading skills to also have good vocabulary and writing skills?

My son had this problem, although it’s unusual. I realized that by grade two he didn’t read very well, but could spell, speak, and write very well. It turned out that he has a learning disability. Poor reading skills can be caused by a problem differentiating letter forms; by a person’s inability to form pictures in their head; or other difficulties understanding the relationship between the written word and what the words are describing. It’s entirely possible to be both gifted (very smart) and have a learning disability. My son was one of about a dozen students in his school with this problem, and he attended a special program that recognized he was gifted in being able to form and understand complex ideas, but had reading challenges.
