About 25 years now, after coming out of an IT career. My advice is always the same: seek out and join a local writers’ group. Its members can teach you the ropes and point you in the right direction for jobs and the like. Just make sure it’s a group of published authors; a group of amateurs is great for learning the basics and camaraderie, but if you want to be published, find a group of professionals.
