Why did my top performing employee quit after write up?

During Covid, I successfully managed a hospital kitchen for two years without contracting the virus. I consistently fulfilled my shift responsibilities, tirelessly working over 60 hours per week and even completing a 19-day streak without breaks. To ensure smooth operations despite being short-staffed, I revamped processes, redesigned menus, and familiarized myself with all stations and shifts.

However, when a new director joined the team, a cook complained about feeling pressured when I reminded her to inform me before running out of ingredients. Though I remained composed and did not raise my voice or accuse her, I couldn't hide my frustration as I had to handle her tasks while managing the room service line during a busy lunch rush. Astonishingly, the new director, who had never worked in any kitchen before, wrote me up for not fostering a respectful culture. It felt like a terrible insult.

Now, it's evident that if you have a valuable employee whom you cannot afford to lose, it's crucial to remember that they have better opportunities elsewhere and are staying because they feel appreciated and rewarded. Once you take away that appreciation, they are better off seeking higher-paying positions elsewhere.
