How did the Japanese learn to write in Chinese characters? Why didn't they invent their own writing system like other countries did?

Actually, there are only 8 Main writing systems in the world.

And only 40+ Secondary writing systems.

Japanese writing system is a sub-system of Chinese writing system, but 75-80% other countries don’t even have a sub-system, they directly using the Main-system.
