Are there any tips to improve problem solving skills?

Problem solving for me is to think things through. Not to automatically do the first thing that pops up but to look at all the ways to solve it.

I myself, have a tendency to solve my problems with the first idea. But really in order to develop problem solving skills I need to weigh out different strategies.

Writing down pros and cons.

Get advice from a mentor.
