What are some ways to improve in programming for someone who does not have a passion for it, but sees it as a necessary skill for financial reasons?

Individual differences greatly alter the manager’s tactics. In my experience, I have given low skilled programmers two similar tasks. The first has been to perform specific maintenance fixes. Even then, some better programmer needs to test each program before returning it to production.

The second simple task has been copying the design of a well-written report to make a second report. For example, report IV4TAG prints bin labels for a given kind of inventory. We need a second report IV4TAGN to print labels for a second kind of inventory. The second program uses the inputs, the selection criteria, the printer selection, the formatting, and probably some other routines. as models.

In a similar task is adding a control break with totals to an existing report with multiple control breaks.

Lastly, working along side a proficient programmer can greatly improve a rookie. Many times, I assigned a good programmer like Robert Kurumada to guide a lesser. Thorough Ron Olson guided speedster Richard Greene; they both benefited and their organization got far more accomplished than two solos would have done.

As for passion, I worked about forty years, and programming enabled me to solve many business problems, which I enjoyed and for which, my customers compensated me. Passion?
