One has to be willing, and not be afraid to make mistakes. When I first started repairing around the house, seemed like a job that isn’t made for me. With time I got the hand of it. There are a few pointers that are important to consider though.
Start Small: You don’t want to jump into a huge project right away. I learned this the hard way when I decided to retile a bathroom for my first project—huge mistake! Start with something manageable, like installing shelves or painting a room. These smaller wins build your confidence and help you get a feel for tools and techniques.
Choose The Right Tools: Always research tips and tricks first, watch a video, and then find the best tools for that particular job. At first, I tried to get by with whatever random tools I had around. Let’s just say, using a butter knife as a screwdriver doesn’t work long term! Invest in a good, basic toolset: a hammer, screwdrivers (both flathead and Phillips), a tape measure, a level, and a power drill. You’ll use these on almost every project.
Watch Video Tutorials For A Hands On Approach: YouTube videos are your best friends. But don’t just watch—actually do the work yourself! I used to spend hours watching tutorials and thought I knew everything, but the first time I tried to hang a door, it still didn’t fit right because I didn’t have that hands-on experience yet. There’s no substitute for doing it.
Be Prepared: Pre prep for any project is essential to mandate good outcome. For example, painting walls is one of the most common beginner projects, but if you don’t tape off edges or put down drop cloths, you’re going to end up with paint where it doesn’t belong. I learned this when I ended up with paint all over my hardwood floors—spent more time cleaning than I did painting!
Hope this helps! It’s just a few things, but once you go about it, you learn how subtle things can make a huge difference. Happy DIYing!
