How does driver education improve your driving skills?

It will show you what maybe Uncle Bob may never have been taught - how to do something the right way. Many people are never taught how to do something the right way from the start. Often, I have student talk about how they are starting to correct their parents’ bad habits and driving errors.

Professional instruction will:

Provide you with explain how you should do thing properly to be safe and legal. However you drive once you are licensed is up to you (and the cops) but you have to get past the road test first.

Professional instructors know not only how to do something but how to teach it as well. How often when you ask “How?” has the response been “You just do it!”

Teach you how to identify and respond to risks so when they morph into problems you are in a better position to deal with them. So many collisions happen because someone makes a mistake that someone else didn’t have a chance to avoid because they simply hadn’t identified the risk and done something to mitigate it.

I had a student a number of years ago who was a ballerina with The National Ballet of Canada who comment during a lesson that driving was like a ballet - everything is choreographed and timed and nothing should be done suddenly and without planning. A good insight and, like ballet, you only get to be among the best if you get the right training.

Drive safe!
