Can a fresher be hired as an embedded engineer? Are there any particular skills that they need to possess?

Yes, freshers can certainly be hired as embedded engineers, though it's common for companies to look for specific skills and potential in candidates.

Embedded engineers design, develop, and test the software that runs on embedded systems – the tiny computers hidden inside everyday objects like cars, appliances, and medical devices. Hardware Embedded engineers specifically focus on the hardware element of the system

Below are some skills that I look in an Embedded Hardware Engineer:

Digital and Analog Circuit Design: Proficiency in designing and analyzing both digital and analog circuits, including understanding components like resistors, capacitors, transistors, and integrated circuits.

Microcontroller/Microprocessor Architecture: Deep understanding of the internal workings of microcontrollers and microprocessors, including their instruction sets, memory management, and peripherals.

PCB Design and Layout: Ability to design and lay out printed circuit boards (PCBs) that house the electronic components of embedded systems.

Soldering and Prototyping: Hands-on experience in soldering components onto PCBs and building prototypes to test and refine designs.

Schematic Reading and Interpretation: Ability to read and understand electronic schematics, which are graphical representations of circuit designs.

Debugging and Troubleshooting: Skills in identifying and resolving hardware issues using tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.

Some additional skills sets essential would be

Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: The ability to analyze complex problems, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions.

Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in design, implementation, and testing to ensure reliability and functionality of the embedded system.

Teamwork and Communication: Effective collaboration with other engineers, designers, and project stakeholders.

Adaptability and Continuous Learning: Willingness to keep up with the latest technologies and trends in the rapidly evolving field of embedded systems.

I have been designing embedded systems for more than a decade - for various companies and agencies. It is very essential for an embedded engineer to have hardware skills. For this, the training they receive in college or in training institutes isn’t sufficient because it is all academically oriented. Look for places to have experience in designing systems.
