This is an old post, but I found myself in the most toxic work environment of my entire life when I recently changed careers. I was laid off from a sales job in a dying industry in April, could not find another sales job for some reason, so I settled for a Legal Assistant job that I had no previous experience in. It’s easy to get hired here because of the unbelievable turnover. These 2 attorneys are absolute psychopaths - some of the things they have told me had made my stomach turn - they hate their own family members for no good reason. They consider their son a loser because he became a teacher (not a prestigious enough job according to them.) Yet, whenever I search legal assistant and paralegal jobs, they all want experience or a degree. I got pretty lucky to land at a firm that is willing to train, regardless of how toxic it is. I spend my days feeling grateful for the opportunity and with the knowledge that my time there will not be forever. It's a stepping stone, so I block the toxicity out as much as I can and focus on learning.
