I don’t carry much cash. I use GPay and PhonePay.
At our age, we don’t go out shopping for daily needs. We order online. The shops come to us.
We don’t miss our children living abroad. We talk on Video using WhatsApp frequently.
I used to write letters to the Editor once upon a time. Only two of my letters have actually been published in their printed editions and that too after editing to reduce the number of words. Today every single answer I write on Quora is published and no one edits them and some of them get thousands of views.
We used to go to the movies. The movies now come home to us.
We stood in queues in Banks and post offices. No more. Money is accessed by simply tapping on the phone.
The Mixer/blender/grinder, Microwave oven, Instant Pot have made cooking hassle free.
The dishwasher, washing machine, and vacuum cleaner have made household chores less strenuous.
We needed to visit libraries, and search through books, and documents to get information on any subject. Now Google and AI chatbots give us all the information we want, instantly.
Ticket booking is now done online from the comfort of our home.
We can now travel in chauffeur driven cars without owning one and without worrying about parking problems.
When searching for unfamiliar places, we used to stop and ask people. Now navigation apps like Google maps guide us.
Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams help us avoid travel to attend meetings.
These are some examples. I am sure our readers can suggest many more in the comment box.
I consider myself lucky to belong to a generation that lived without any of these conveniences and then slowly enjoyed the thrill of experiencing all this one by one.
At the start of my professional career, I did not have even a calculator. I used a slide rule. There were no photocopying machines. No personal computers. Drawings were made on tracing paper using pencils, straight edges and erasers. Documents were prepared by typing on noisy manual typewriters. Communication was through letters that reached in two or three days instead of two or three seconds!
I am blessed indeed.
I can’t guess what more is in store for all of you in future.
