Our whole knowledge of the world is, in one sense, self-knowledge. And knowing is a translation of external events into bodily processes, and especially into states of the nervous system and the brain; we know the world in terms of the body, and in accordance with its structure starting with the five senses.
Perceiving awakens the senses, then there is contact, then sensation, then desire and then knowledge. Knowledge comes from this process. Knowledge is stored in the brain as memory. Thought is the response/recovery mechanism to memory. With the arising of sensation comes the urge to possess, which begins the turmoil of desire and thought and creates the habit of seeking further sensation. This is the natural greed of thought; maintaining its existence through distractions.
This is our pattern of living, and the whole process is based on this movement, which is the content of our consciousness on the plane of existence. We cannot escape this pattern, nor should we want to, but we can learn, through intelligence and affection, to set thought aside or place it in its proper home in our brain. In doing so, it no longer dominates the living of life but rather serves it.
