Why must everyone know English?

As an EFL teacher in China, I was once asked to make a speech on the importance of learning English. Here are some of the points I mentioned:

English is THE international language. No other language in the world, not even French or Mandarin (with 1.5 billion speakers in China alone and others in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, the UK, US etc.) has been designated the one and only international language of the whole world.

Knowing English opens many doors. If you can speak English, you can work as an interpreter/translator, as a pilot, air traffic controller, diplomat, tour guide, journalist, in international hotels and many other occupations.

Knowing English gives you a common language in which to communicate with business partners, suppliers and customers all over the world.

English is the language of science and technology. Scientific discoveries and ground-breaking research findings from advanced western nations are recorded in English. Computer programming languages all use English.

Many of today’s blockbuster movies and chart-topping songs come from the US. Knowing English enables you to access these forms of entertainment.

The world’s top universities include Oxford and Cambridge in the UK and Yale and Harvard in the US. Without knowing English, you would not be accepted as a student at any of those universities, no matter how good your grades are.
