That a library (especially a bigger one) is somewhat more complex than their bookshelves at home. I remember one guy entering our main catalogue and asking for a certain book - when I told him to fill out a form, then he could fetch it in an hour downstairs in the loan dept., he asked, “Can’t you get it here at once?” I told him that wasn’t possible, and he replied, “Do you have such a mess in your archives? Let me look for it myself, and I’ll find it in ten minutes!” In these times we had 15 miles of books in our magazines . . .
