I think that the best place to start would be by signing up for an online psychology course at your local community college or university. There are also programmes like the Great Teaching Courses programme that offer non-credit courses online in a variety of disciplines. Reading a psychology text without having the associated syllabus and lectures would be more challenging and quite a dry read.
