What is there to learn? Just do the same thing and pass results by mail.
Which you most probably do when working on-site. So the only difference is presenting via video call instead of while sitting next to whoever the other person is.
Basically, no difference.
Until you need to have to notebook fixed or something like that.
…
Already back in the days, we were using chat, email and phone to talk to each other. Rather than run around and bother them at the least convenient moments when they were working on something.
Not to mention all the mess and noise that would accompany it.
We would get a meeting room for some chats. But the flipchart was used extremely rarely on some brainstorming and such. And when people who were actually trying to cooperate and not just screw up each other (i.e. 1% of cases as opposed of 99% of the garbage going on in offices) really wanted to get to something.
However, I have done those exercises with some women on the other side of the world via a call with a some basic drawings in extreme cases. Even using video.
While I had a psychological session with the most arrogant and horrible individuals, teaching them how to work and behave on-site. Because my boss just wanted to really get some hell showered on me. Or didn’t want to teach those girls how to behave, think, work, … herself.
Yeah. And that is work that requires much more thinking, communication, collaboration, prototyping, design, … .
It depends only on the people. And nothing else.
…
The only thing that does not work quite so well when working online is bullying. By the mob in the office, or your boss, or an older colleague.
;)
Now that the word has gone through that work-from home situations. There is no excuse for employers to not work this way. Except for that only real reason, which has always been the same and the source of all the problems and difficulties and impossibilities and … The one I mentioned above. And few more variations on that.
;)
So, if you don’t do work that requires physical presence (well, IT support issuing and fixing notebooks have to be there, diggers and brick layers do have to be there, surgeons do (still) need to be there) and you want to work remotely and your potential employer tells you that it is not possible
that is a giant red flag (or at least dark orange one)
for they do most certainly have some sinister reasons for that
or the personnel (boss & colleagues) is truly miserable and expect hell instead of work
